SharePoint 2016 Central Admin: System Settings – Manage Services in this farm

  Manage services in this farm (direct Link http://centraladmin-url /_admin/FarmServices.aspx)

Note: You should be login with Farm administrator with local admin on the server, otherwise this option will not visible.

When you click on the Manage services in this farm Link, you will be landed on Services in Farm Page. This page will give you the information about the Services in Farm.

On this page, you will see following information:

  • Service: this column listed all the services instance in the farm which are provisioned in the farm. I.e If you provision the Access Service Application then Access service instance will have listed. Most Service instances are provisioned along with the server role (selected at the time of configuration).
  • Auto Provision: this is new option in the SharePoint 2016, With the new MinRole feature Now some service will be auto provision on the basis of the role selected while configuring the server. I.e If We select the Distributed Cache Role then you will see Distributed Cache Service is marked as Yes in the auto Provision column.
  • Action: in this, you get the option to enable or disable the auto provision the services.
  • Complaint: This column is also come with the MinRole feature, this section is controlled by the health analyzer rule, which run overnight. If health rule dedicate the server is not complaint with the configured role, then it will attempt to auto provision all the services which are un-provisioned also stop the services which are not compliant with the server role to make it complaint.

There are two views available for this page,

  1. Configurable (Default View), it will list all the services which can be start or stop.
  2. All: this view lists all the service including configurable and non-configurable

All item Views.

  • To get the All Item View.
  • Click on the Dropdown next to the Configurable ( top right), Select All

  • You will see page like this

    You notice on this page there are many services which we can’t stop /start them. These are mandatory service which are important for stable SharePoint environment i.e. Application Discovery and Load Balancer Service is listed there but Action column is empty for it. We still can manage it using the PowerShell.

Note: keep in mind, if a service is required for the Server Role and you disable it than healthy analyzer rule on next run will provision it. We can manage the Health Analyzer Rule what it should do and when it run.
