Installation of Office Online Server for SharePoint 2016 – Part 1

Office web apps get a new name with the release of new version of it called Office Online Server (OOS). OOS is the new version release in 2016, which support exchange SharePoint 2016 and Skype for business / Lync. OOS use to view and edit the office document in the office online(browser). In other words, it is lightweight web base version of office.

Deployment and configuration of the OOS is easy and streamline from the previous version. Office online support both Http & Https, it is highly recommended to use the https. You can access the office online server using internal url or external url or both urls.

Office Online server, now a day must have product if you want to following feature

  • Excel Service (it is part of Office Online Server)
  • Durable links, new feature in SharePoint Server 2016 require the OOS
  • Co-Authoring also depend on OOS.
  • Preview of the documents (search previews) also require OOS

Single OOS farm can be connected to the SharePoint 2016, exchange server and skype for business.

Licensing requirement

If you are enterprise customer with volume licensing account then view only license of OOS is covered but you have to pay extra for the create new, edit and save document. Best way is to contact your Microsoft account manager.


You have to make sure the following requirement meet before installation.

Hardware and software requirement

    • OOS can be install on physical or virtual servers.
    • OOS hardware requirement almost same as the SharePoint server.
  • 12 GB
  • 64-bit, 4 cores
  • 80 GB for system drive
  • 80 GB for second drive
  • As of now, OOS support on Windows Sever 2012 R2 (64Bit)
  • There is no requirement for the SQL server as no database for OOS.
  • Windows Server 2012 should be updated or have at least following KB installed.
  • Office online server should be in the same forest as SharePoint.


  • Port 443 for HTTPS traffic
  • Port 80 for HTTP traffic
  • Port 809 for private traffic between the servers that run Office Online Server (if you’re setting up a multi-server farm)

 Dedicated Requirement

  • Make sure no other office application or Server application (SharePoint, exchange etc) installed on the server where OOS will be going install.
  • As SharePoint installation is not supported on the domain controller, same true for the OOS.
  • SharePoint should be configured for the Claim based authentication. OOS do not support the classic authentication.
  • Always install Office online server on dedicated servers.

Installation Order

Please perform the installation in the following order.

  • Installation of prerequisites
  • Installation of the Office Online Server and Language packs
  • Configure the Office Online server and verify it
  • Connect Office online server with SharePoint
